Your Old Coping Strategies
We have all developed specific coping strategies in childhood to ‘get through’ some of the tough times we experienced. However, many people grow into adulthood still using the same ways of coping that have now become outdated and ineffective. Take some time and reflect upon why you do what you do and ask yourself this, are my ways of coping protecting me or imprisoning me?
It is common for those who have experienced trauma (particularly at a very young age) to use a coping strategy, and a common one is called dissociation. Dissociation is a psychological process whereby a person detaches themselves from their own thoughts, feelings and memories. It must be stated that dissociation is a normal response to a trauma.
